The tradition of daily live music in the Pump Room began in 1709, thanks to the social visionary Beau Nash. Known for transforming Bath into a fashionable spa town during the Georgian era, Nash introduced live classical music as part of the daily routine for visitors who came to “take the waters” – drinking a prescribed gallon of spa water believed to cure a variety of internal ailments.
Originally known as Beau Nash’s Pump Room Band, the ensemble not only performed during the day for spa visitors, but also delighted guests at the glittering weekly Pump Room Balls. These were the social highlight of the season, where Bath’s high society gathered to dance, gossip, and forge influential connections.
A Timeless Soundtrack to Bath’s Elegance
Today, this enchanting tradition is kept alive by The Pump Room Trio – widely believed to be Europe’s longest-established resident music ensemble. The current trio, Lucy (violin), Matthew (cello), and Imogen (piano), bring classical music to life every day, entertaining visitors from all over the world as they enjoy breakfast, lunch, or the iconic afternoon tea experience in the Pump Room.

Lucy, Matthew and Imogen first played together in the Pump Room in 2007 and were delighted to become the official resident trio in 2022. Warm and approachable, they’re always happy to chat with guests – whether you’re making a request, reminiscing about a piece you heard elsewhere, or just marvelling at the beauty of live music echoing through one of Bath’s most iconic venues.
Beyond their Pump Room performances, the trio are highly accomplished musicians. They teach, examine, and coach young talent, while also playing in orchestras and chamber groups across the South West and beyond.
